Learn Which Engine Is Right for You

The topic of engines is always a popular one when talking about cars. While many might covet the V8 engine that produces upwards of 500 horsepower, a bigger engine isn’t always the answer. When it comes to getting the most out of your Land Rover SUV, it often comes down to more than horsepower. Here at Land Rover Orlando, we thought we’d give a quick guide to engines to help you in your vehicle search.

Whether you’re driving your Range Rover SUV through the streets of Orlando, FL or taking it off the beaten path, finding the right engine for your wants and needs is essential. We’ll use the 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport as our example vehicle, as it offers an array of engine types.

When it comes to understanding the output of an engine, bigger usually means more power all around. However, thanks to hybrid models like the available turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine and the 85-kW electric motor which, in total, produces 398 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque, fewer cylinders can generate more power than engines with more cylinders.

Furthermore, due to a vehicle’s size and weight, some engines don’t end up producing a more efficient drive just by being larger. Automakers try to maximize output while minimizing cost and loss by providing specific engines based on the vehicle. So, while a 5.0-liter V8 engine works in the Range Rover Sport, you wouldn’t necessarily get the same output if that same engine were in a smaller vehicle like the Land Rover Discovery. While larger engines tend to make you go faster more quickly, they eat up much more gas than a smaller engine.

In the end, a lot of it comes down to preference and need. If you plan to haul or travel off-road, a larger engine might help you. However, if you’re likely to stick to the streets of Orlando, a V6 engine will provide plenty of power and conserve more fuel.
